attacking women's reproductive rights seem to be the favorite past time of republicans as of late. lawmakers are passing legislation requiring 24 hour wait periods and in the case of arizona, making it legal for a doctor to with hold vital medical information from a woman if that information could influence the decision about whether to terminate the pregnancy. it seems information is being with held from the politicians leading the charge because they are making some stupid statements about the laws this public. here is the governor of pennsylvania on the state's proposed ultrasound mandate. >> wouldn't change it. we're still waiting to see. >> making them watch, does that go too far in your mind? >> i don't know how you make anybody watch. you just have to close your eyes. as long as it's on exterior, not

interior. amazing. joining us is sheila jackson lee. >> thank you for having me. >> it's estimated that a quarter of women in texas have no health insurance. now, they're one lifeline, planned parenthood is threatened thanks to republicans blocking federal funds. what is going to be the result for these women in your state? >> martin, first of all i feel that will i'm under siege. i don't know where to turn the i'm a woman beyond childbearing stage. i'm thinking about all the younger women and single parents who have utilized the affiliates of planned parenthood as their access to held care including young women in college. one who gave a testimony who

said she has been using planned parenthood affiliates. those are dealing with health care, mammograms and other physical issues that women have. i believe the story out of texas just adds insult to injury from pennsylvania to arizona and back to texas also has a sonogram law. what we have done is cut off the lifeline of health care to the state that has the largest number of uninsured persons period. now 130,000 women, 130,000 women, and more to come will now be denied access to health care. we're fighting against it. >> i think people thought that rick's perry damage was done once he left the presidential campaign. here is your governor, thursday on the subject of planned parenthood. listen to this. >> dwoents want planned parenthood and their affiliate who is are in the abortion

business engaged in this process. it's pretty straight up. >> under federal law the money is not allowed to go to abortions under this program at all. >> well, we would rather be very sure of it. >> well, there you have your governor confused as ever. what is your response to what he just said? >> let's just throw the supreme court decision and federal law under the bus. first of all, the proposition was correct. federal law does not allow these moneys to go to any entities dealing with abortion. it's been well known for decades that planned parenthood has a wonderful system of health care centers that allow access to poor women. women who are in my community and throughout the state who lives have an altered and changed for the better for this. to say we want to be certain, what i ask my governor, can he

document case where is the federal law has been violated. this program has been going on since the bush administration because the law that was passed that was in essence started in 2005 in the state of texas. we have been serving women since that time. that was under president bush administration. what other administration would have been more astute about making sure that they didn't fund abortion, the bush administration. we have been using this program since that. planned parenthood has been successfully treating sick women, women who have no alternatives and we have been those entities along with other providers. what i want to say to the governor is, someone said, they don't want to see our tax dollars. these are women's tax dollars as well. don't tell us what to do with our tax dollars and frankly, our bodies. this is not a religious entity and therefore we're not violating any religion.

day before. i think he's trying to bring that attitude to it and try to move away from and off of the negative conversation that we've seen for the last three or four weeks. >> congratulations. i can see you sitting across from me that you're pregnant. i think you're seven months pregnant. what goes through your mind when you hear candidates talking about banning contraception, talking about transvaginal scans and probes and sonograms and 24 hours delay when a woman may be carrying a deceased fetus ends up requiring a termination. what's your reaction? >> i was always staujly pro-choice before i decided to get pregnant. right now we have legislation in the senate that was bipartisan originally and now it's a highly contested bill and gop senators

are now sure how they will vote on it. even the most basic things like giving funding for domestic violence or sexual assault centers are now under attack. in terms of the various ways in which these sonogram tests are being forced on women or these ultrasound tests are being forced, i think it's appalling. when i had my first sonogram, i think it radicalize med even more. we're saying not only are you responsible for carrying the fetus to term but you can't make the decision on what you're supposed to do with your body. it's so crude that i'm just amazed this is part of our 2012 election cycle again. >> michael, are you disappointed at the way some of these issues are being characterized at the moment? >> i cannot begin to express my ire with the idiocy be this has

disclosed as discussion points. as the professor has noted prepare herself for gnaw life. she doesn't need to have this noise in her ears and worry about if she's carrying a daughter, what she will be entering into this world. i think the party needs to step off of this issue. get back to talking about the core issues. let individuals and communities work out for themselves what's in their best interest. >> when you say that that sounds so sensible and reasonable and appropriate. >> you see i'm no longer chairman. >> it sounds to me that reasonableness is really no longer welcome because when you hear what these candidates say, even in unprovoked moment, there does appear to be a desire to

attack women that just seems unseemly and wrong. >> i won't go to that point and say there's a desire to attack women because i don't believe that's what this is. i think this is come to the land of political. when you get on that terrain, everything is topsy-turvy and distorted. it's not a real reflection of the most important thing we should be doing. i know a lot of these folks that are spouting some of this rhetoric and they're not that kind of person or those type ts of people. i think people have got caught up in this thing that started a few weeks ago that was a legitimate debate that's now what is termed a war on women. i can say i'm not at war with women as a republican and 99.9% of the republicans who i associate with aren't as well. that's why we need to move off of this silliness and get back

he is now 3 million women in one state? >> no, no, that's 3 million women across the country every year that go to planned parenthood. it is tens of thousands of women in illinois that depend on planned parenthood. a number of us came out where mitt romney was having a fund-raising breakfast with the president of the illinois chapter of planned parenthood, and a dozen or so women holding up signs that said keep your mitts off our birth control.

young women, and moms that don't believe mitt romney ought to be making a campaign issue out of any access to birth control. kind of a reminder that this really is the year 2012. >> indeed. there is a danger here, isn't there. once in office, a president romney is going to feel pressure to prove his conservative -- i'm sure he heard comparisons people make between him and george h.w. bu bush. >> i can't understand if he is trying to come to the suburbs of chicago and play a game of appealing to moderates, wink wink, and to independents and say well, i have been on all sides of the issue in a way, to either present himself as maybe i am more moderate than i sound to them, because i'll tell you, i don't think the position that

he's taking this hard line on women's healthcare is going to go over well in illinois. i don't know if he is trying to play this subtle game of both sides of the issue. >> congresswoman, i don't understand the position these republicans want to place women in. they condemn the use of contraception, and at the same time then say that ultrasounds are required, there are 24 hour delays for a woman that may require a termination. what is the woman supposed to do when she's in a check mate position. >> exactly. planned parenthood does more than any other single organization to prevent abortions because they do help women with contraceptive, family planning, with birth control, and so you're absolutely right. by taking away birth control, inevitably, the result would be
